Good to know - About the island
from the Spetsathlon website

Located at a distance of just 54 nautical miles from Athens and with a predominantly Mediterranean climate, Spetses is the ideal location for any athletic event (or yoga retreats) since the temperatures are mild and the conditions fair and rather dry. Under Venetian rule it was known as Isola di Spezzie (island of fragrances) while further back in ancient times it was Pityoussa (pine-covered). With its naval tradition, a rich history and culture, the island of Spetses is the ideal choice for a Triathlon race of international scope.

Visitors will be captivated by the picturesque harbours of Dapia and Palio Limani with their cobbled sidewalks, captains’ mansions, ornate balconies and colourful fragrant gardens. Having adopted a policy that prohibits the use of cars on the island and boasting a ring-road of 25 km, the island is an original and safe choice for organized sports.

Its beauty is impressive and is characterized by the spectacular combination of the green of the pine trees and the blue of the sea, with many lovely beaches and wonderful, secluded coves, many of which are only accessible by sea. The beautiful forests and panoramic views of nearby islands and the Peloponnesian coast offer idyllic images from the race routes.

Spetses Guide

The Greek island of Spetses is part of the Saronic group of islands and is known for its long association with the navy and is famous for the part it played in the 1821 War of Independence. It was on the island that the revolution flag was hoisted in April 1821. The island has managed to retain a degree of its Greek charm and atmosphere visible to all are some lovely example of well preserved grand captain's mansions which bear testament to the island's past.

The island's harbour is at Dapia and is the tourist and commercial hub of the island and it is from here that lovely horse drawn carriage tours can be taken which take in the many examples of mansions that line pretty narrow cobbled streets. September is perhaps the best time to visit the island when "Armata" takes place. This is a re-enactment of a naval battle that has taken place every year since 1931. A popular attraction on the island is its cathedral and is the resting place of Paul Bonaparte, nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte, who came to Greece to fight to fight alongside the Greeks. It is reported that his body was kept in a barrel of rum for three years.
